The Music Division aims to foster a deep appreciation for musical artistry through top-tier educational programs. Serving the wider University population, it provides foundational music courses for General Education, ensemble performance experiences, private instruction, and introductory classes in piano, voice, and guitar, alongside Music minor options. The Bachelor of Music program equips aspiring professionals with essential skills, enabling graduates to: 1) proficiently interpret sheet music and recognize performance inaccuracies, 2) critically assess fundamental components in musical compositions and renditions, 3) deliver technically sound performances adhering to stylistic conventions. Admission and graduation standards align with the National Association of Schools of Music guidelines and Tennessee's teacher certification requirements. Undergraduate students may pursue either a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Music or a more specialized Bachelor of Music (B.M.) with five focus areas: instrumental performance, vocal performance, composition, instrumental music education, or vocal music education. The B.M. curriculum dedicates roughly 66% of its four-year structure to musical training. Specifically designed for future educators, the music education track blends academic coursework with pedagogical training, culminating in teaching certification. All degree pathways provide solid foundations for advanced graduate studies in music.
