The Philosophy Department provides an accelerated dual-degree program allowing exceptional students to obtain both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in philosophy within five years. Students achieve this by counting 9 credit hours of approved graduate coursework toward both degrees. Prospective candidates usually seek provisional acceptance into the program during or right after their junior year. Admission requirements include: declared Philosophy major status, completion of at least 90 credit hours with a 3.25 overall GPA, and 15 philosophy credits with a 3.5 GPA. Three recommendation letters are mandatory. While not compulsory, completing PHIL 235 and a 400-level philosophy course is highly recommended. The department evaluates additional qualifications like professional experience and academic promise when considering applications. Final approval for provisional admission requires consent from both the Philosophy Department and Graduate School. Applicants receive notification of their status by the start of their senior year.
