An English major requires 49 credit hours, including six hours of English Composition, 15 hours of sophomore-level coursework, and 28 hours of advanced English classes. Students can choose from four tracks: Literature, Writing, Pre-Secondary English Education, or the Legal Studies 3+3 program. Those aiming for professional careers, graduate studies, or non-teaching paths should select either Literature or Writing in consultation with their advisors. Aspiring teachers should pursue the Pre-Secondary English Education track (contact the Department of Educational Studies for licensure information at UTM). The Legal Studies 3+3 option provides an accelerated path to law school at UT Knoxville. English majors must meet with their advisors each semester to plan their course selections. Typically, students should focus on fulfilling general education requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree and completing at least one sophomore literature survey sequence during their first two years.
