An English major requires 49 credit hours: 6 hours in English Composition, 15 hours of sophomore-level classes, and 28 hours of advanced English courses. Students can choose between Concentration 1, 2, 3, or 4 as described below. Those aiming for pre-professional training, graduate studies, or non-teaching careers should work with their advisors and select either Concentration 1 or 2. Future teachers should pursue Concentration 3 (those wanting to complete their teaching licensure at UTM should reach out to the Department of Educational Studies). Students interested in the accelerated law school pathway at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville should choose Concentration 4. All majors should meet with their advisors each semester to discuss course selections and academic planning.
