Among only three undergraduate programs in the U.S. accredited by the Commission on the Accreditation of Programs in Applied and Clinical Sociology, both the BA and BS in Applied Sociology provide students with essential knowledge, skills, training, and hands-on experience to apply sociological theories and research methods to real-world challenges. Through diverse opportunities including internships, independent research, community-based learning, personalized mentorship, collaborative projects, and career preparation, students gain valuable practical experiences that expand their future prospects. The program aims to cultivate scientific yet practical thinking about societies, human interactions, and the social aspects of work and knowledge. It focuses on developing engaged scholars capable of using sociological perspectives to address real social issues in both professional and academic environments. The curriculum strengthens critical thinking, analytical abilities, and practical writing skills. This applied sociology training serves as strong preparation for advanced academic study or careers in various sectors including business, nonprofits, government, and social services such as counseling and social work. By completing core coursework and a hands-on component (either an internship or applied research project) that applies sociological principles to actual social situations, students develop the ability to assess social conditions and create effective solutions to societal challenges.
