The Department of Mechanical Engineering stands among six engineering disciplines within the Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, alongside biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, and optics.
Mechanical engineering focuses on analyzing, designing, and improving mechanical systems. Professionals in this field integrate design principles, manufacturing techniques, industry partnerships, and research breakthroughs to push the boundaries of mechanical innovation. Building on core scientific principles, applied mathematics, and engineering fundamentals, the department provides a challenging curriculum that equips students to become skilled, inventive engineers ready for leadership positions. Learners utilize cutting-edge software to tackle challenges in:
Solid and fluid mechanics, Materials science, Mechanical systems, Advanced energy applications.
Extensive hands-on lab work and advanced design projects provide substantial practical experience in both experimental and computational approaches. These opportunities enhance a curriculum centered on analyzing, designing, and improving mechanical and thermal systems.
Beyond developing leadership and communication abilities essential for professional success, the program fosters awareness of engineering's wider societal and economic influences. These same principles extend to the geomechanics undergraduate program, offered collaboratively with the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences.
The MS program in mechanical engineering mandates 30 graduate credit hours. Candidates must complete either a thesis (Plan A) or an oral examination (Plan B). A maximum of 10 credits may be transferred from non-degree studies at Rochester or other institutions. Consult the Graduate Bulletin for transfer credit procedures.
All graduate students must submit a Program of Study Form, obtainable from the graduate coordinator, before completing their second semester.
