Data science involves developing and implementing advanced techniques to gather, organize, examine, and derive insights from vast datasets. Data consists of individual facts, measurements, or characteristics that help define people, objects, or concepts. In today's digital world, humans continuously produce data via devices like smartphones, online platforms, and social networks. Daily, we create more than 2.5 quintillion bytes of information, with this figure growing steadily. Remarkably, the majority of existing data—over 90%—has been accumulated just in the last five years. A key concept in data science is 'big data,' which describes enormous, intricate datasets that conventional analysis tools struggle to handle. This field concentrates on theories, approaches, and practical uses for interpreting big data, emerging as a significant academic area in modern times.
At the University of Rochester, scholars leverage data science to advance diverse fields including healthcare analysis, cognitive research, commerce, and AI. They're creating innovative techniques, technologies, and systems to enhance our comprehension of complex phenomena.
The University of Rochester's MS in Data Science equips learners with comprehensive knowledge of both theoretical foundations and real-world implementations, holding New York State accreditation. This 30-credit curriculum accommodates students from various academic backgrounds—including sciences, engineering, math, or business—and can be finished in two to three semesters of intensive study.
