The Department of Biostatistics and Computational Biology at the University of Rochester focuses on teaching and research in statistical theory and methods applied to health sciences. Our distinctive graduate program, situated within a School of Medicine setting, offers numerous opportunities for engaging collaborations with applied research projects.
The Master of Science in Biostatistics is designed for students pursuing careers in health-related fields, including pharmaceutical companies and biomedical or clinical research institutions.
The curriculum includes one foundational year (two semesters) of coursework plus a culminating capstone project, typically completed during the summer following the core program. No thesis or language exams are required. The 32-credit degree program comprises all listed 400-level courses, with potential substitutions approved by the faculty advisor.
Students fulfill the capstone requirement by collaborating with medical center researchers on practical projects. They must produce a formal research report and present their findings in a public seminar, followed by an oral qualifying examination.
