The Master of Music (MM) focuses primarily on performance. Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution, with most candidates having earned a Bachelor of Music degree or completed equivalent foundational coursework through another bachelor's program.
Both the MM and MA degrees offer specializations in Composition and Music Education. The MM track for these fields emphasizes performance as a significant secondary component, requiring an audition for admission. Alternatively, the MA option prioritizes research as its secondary focus and doesn't mandate auditions or private lessons.
Eastman's Piano Accompanying Program ranks among the nation's most prestigious and longstanding initiatives. Established by Professor Emerita Jean Barr, the program now features five faculty members and provides MM and DMA degree options. The Piano Accompanying and Chamber Music degree balances in-depth study of both instrumental and vocal repertoire with a demanding academic curriculum that includes foreign languages, music history, and theory. This program cultivates artistic mastery, technical piano skills, and collaborative expertise, delivering exceptional preparation for aspiring professional collaborative pianists.
