The Master of Music (MM) is a graduate degree focused on musical performance. Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution, with most having earned a Bachelor of Music or completed similar core coursework within another bachelor's program.
Both the MM and MA degrees offer specializations in Composition and Music Education. The MM track for these fields emphasizes performance as a secondary component, requiring an audition for admission. The MA alternative prioritizes research instead and doesn't mandate auditions or private lessons.
The Music Education MM program offers a summer-only option, designed for working music educators who complete most requirements during summer terms. Rochester-area teachers may take some courses during regular semesters.
Students can pursue Composition and Music Education through either the professional studies division (MM) or research studies division (MA). All MM programs maintain a performance focus, necessitating an instrumental or vocal audition. The MA has no audition requirement but may incorporate secondary applied study.
Full-time MM students typically complete the program in two years, with a one-year residency requirement. Exceptions include Piano Accompaniment/Chamber Music (two-year residency) and Conducting (normally two academic years).
