Master's programs specializing in composition and music education are available through either the graduate professional studies division (leading to an MM degree as outlined here) or the graduate research studies division (resulting in a Master of Arts). While MM programs in these fields maintain a significant performance component and mandate an audition on a principal instrument or voice, the MA program admits students without an audition but may offer optional applied music study.
Full-time MM candidates typically fulfill residency requirements within one academic year, except for piano accompanying/chamber music (two years) and conducting (usually two years). Most students complete the program in two years of full-time enrollment.
The Master of Music (MM) emphasizes performance excellence and requires applicants to hold an accredited undergraduate degree, preferably a Bachelor of Music or equivalent foundational coursework.
Both MM and MA degrees offer composition and music education specializations. The MM track incorporates substantial performance requirements and an admission audition, while the MA alternative focuses more on research without performance prerequisites.
The MM in Music Education (Professional Studies) curriculum encompasses research methodologies, assessment strategies, instructional design, and music education's historical foundations. Additional requirements include instrumental/choral pedagogy, applied lessons, electives in music theory/composition, and a final comprehensive examination.
