Master's programs specializing in composition and music education are available through either the graduate professional studies division (leading to an MM degree as outlined here) or the graduate research studies division (resulting in a Master of Arts). MM programs, including composition and music education, emphasize performance and mandate an audition on a principal instrument or voice. The MA program doesn't require an admission audition but may incorporate secondary-level applied study.
MM candidates must complete one year of full-time residency, except for piano accompanying/chamber music (two-year requirement) and conducting (typically two academic years). Most students finish within two years of full-time study.
The Master of Music (MM) focuses primarily on performance. Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution, preferably a Bachelor of Music or equivalent core curriculum.
Both MM and MA degrees offer composition and music education specializations. The MM version emphasizes performance as a secondary component and requires an audition. The MA alternative focuses on research as a secondary element and doesn't mandate auditions or lessons.
