Students can pursue Master's degrees in composition and music education through either the graduate professional studies division (MM degree outlined here) or the graduate research studies division (Master of Arts). MM programs, including composition and music education, emphasize performance and mandate an audition on a principal instrument or voice. The MA program doesn't require an audition for entry but may incorporate secondary-level applied study.
MM candidates must complete one year of full-time residency, except for piano accompanying/chamber music (two-year requirement) and conducting (typically two academic years). Most students finish the program in two years of full-time study.
The Master of Music (MM) focuses on performance and requires an accredited undergraduate degree. Ideal candidates typically hold a Bachelor of Music degree or have completed equivalent core coursework within another bachelor's program.
Both MM and MA degrees offer Composition and Music Education majors. The MM version features performance as a significant secondary component with mandatory auditions, while the MA version emphasizes research without requiring auditions or applied lessons.
