The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree recognizes the completion of original academic research successfully presented in a dissertation or exceptional creative work. This degree signifies that recipients possess not only deep knowledge of their field's content and methodologies, but have also shown intellectual curiosity and innovative thinking that suggests strong potential for research, creative work, and teaching excellence. The Composition, Theory, and Musicology departments provide a combined MA/PhD pathway. While music education PhD candidates must hold a master's degree for admission, Composition, Musicology, and Theory students may enter with just a bachelor's degree, earning their master's degree along the way. Composition and Music Education students can choose between DMA and PhD degree options, with the PhD focusing on research and writing while the DMA emphasizes performance and requires an audition.
Eastman's Theory department maintains exceptional standards of musical scholarship. Theory graduate students typically gain teaching experience through assistantships in the undergraduate core curriculum, contributing to the program's excellent job placement record. The department regularly hosts lectures, symposia, and visiting scholars, fostering a vibrant intellectual community for faculty and students alike.
