The Health Services Research and Policy PhD program in the Department of Public Health Sciences has excelled at equipping students for scholarly careers in research, education, and public service across academic, policy, and government sectors.
Recognized as a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) program since 2010, our doctoral initiative benefits from its location within a major medical center, offering access to clinical research facilities and faculty collaborations. The curriculum emphasizes applying social and behavioral sciences to practical health challenges, including healthcare systems, financing, service delivery, care quality, patient outcomes, and population health management.
This PhD program cultivates researchers capable of developing solutions for healthcare challenges. Through interdisciplinary coursework and research opportunities, students acquire diverse competencies. Candidates may pursue dual degrees, combining the PhD with an M.P.H. or M.D. Financial support includes stipends, tuition coverage, and funding for training and professional travel. Graduates are prepared for careers in higher education, public service, or industry. The Department of Public Health Sciences hosts this program alongside MS degrees in Epidemiology, Public Health, Health Services Research, and Clinical Investigations, plus a separate PhD in Epidemiology.
