The DMA degree recognizes exceptional achievement in musical performance and instruction. To qualify, applicants must exhibit outstanding artistic ability coupled with superior intellectual capacity.
Graduate students can pursue composition and music education through either professional studies (DMA track) or research-oriented programs. These pathways differ in focus and curriculum. Notably, DMA applicants must complete an instrumental or vocal audition, while PhD candidates are exempt from this requirement. The DMA program uniquely emphasizes applied musical practice across all specializations. Composition and music education concentrations incorporate significant performance elements in the DMA curriculum, contrasting with the PhD program's approach. The piano accompanying graduate program cultivates skilled collaborative pianists. These musicians need soloist-level technical proficiency along with expertise in languages, diction, sonata repertoire, vocal literature, and chamber music. Eastman's vibrant performance culture provides abundant collaboration partners and performance venues for accompanying students.
The DMA degree requirements outline the formal coursework students must complete. Typically requiring at least 60 post-master's credits, each study plan requires Graduate Professional Committee approval. Students design their curriculum with faculty advisors, submitting proposals by their third semester (or after completing 20 credits). Programs vary based on diagnostic test results in music theory/history, educational background, and professional objectives. The GPC must approve the study plan at least four months before doctoral qualifying exams. Full-time students generally complete the DMA program in 3.5 years.
