The Arthur Satz Department of Music at the University of Rochester provides a bachelor of arts (BA) in music, a minor option, and diverse technical and non-technical courses. Students may also enroll in Eastman School of Music courses, available to all qualified students with the necessary prerequisites.
Collaborating with the Eastman School of Music, the Arthur Satz Department offers a bachelor of arts in music. This program combines academic studies, private lessons, and ensemble participation to develop musical understanding across languages, history, and composition while promoting performance excellence. While rigorous, the music major allows flexibility for students to pursue double majors or pre-professional tracks like pre-law or pre-medicine.
University regulations limit students to a maximum of 80 credit hours within their concentration.
Music department undergraduates frequently engage in research through independent studies, often aligned with their major focus areas. Working closely with faculty advisors, students develop and execute research projects, with ongoing opportunities to consult professors about their ideas.
Undergraduate music research encompasses scholarly work (analytical and historical studies), creative compositions (including musical theater and chamber pieces), and performance-based projects.
