The Modern Languages and Cultures (MLC) program allows students to pursue clusters, minors, and majors in various languages including comparative literature, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. Additionally, students can choose a cluster or minor in Chinese, and clusters in Korean and Portuguese.
Over 125 million people speak Japanese worldwide. While the majority live in Japan, significant Japanese-speaking communities exist in Brazil, Peru, Argentina, Australia, Canada, and the United States. MLC majors typically complete ten to thirteen courses, with requirements varying based on prior language experience. All MLC majors begin with two common foundational courses before branching into program-specific core and elective classes.
Except for Comparative Literature, all MLC majors follow this structure:
Students can select from diverse Japanese language courses catering to different proficiency levels, as well as classes exploring Japanese culture, media, and historical studies.
