Within Modern Languages and Cultures (MLC), learners have the option to pursue concentrations, minors, or majors in various languages including comparative literature, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. Additionally, Chinese is available for clusters and minors, while Korean and Portuguese can be taken as cluster programs.
Over 125 million individuals speak Japanese worldwide. Although the majority live in Japan, significant Japanese-speaking communities exist in countries like Brazil, Peru, Argentina, Australia, Canada, and the United States. The MLC major typically involves completing ten to thirteen courses, with the exact number depending on a student's prior language background. All MLC majors begin with two common introductory courses before branching into program-specific core and elective classes.
Except for Comparative Literature, all MLC degree programs follow this standardized structure:
Students can choose from an extensive selection of Japanese language courses, catering to different proficiency levels, as well as classes exploring Japanese cultural studies, media, and historical topics.
