Rochester undergraduates can craft their own academic path through interdepartmental majors and minors, blending existing university courses into personalized programs.
These interdisciplinary programs lead to a Bachelor of Arts degree, requiring ten core courses (40 credits) across at least two departments, plus up to four additional courses. Each major is guided by two faculty advisors and must gain approval from the Committee on Individualized Interdepartmental Programs (CIIP). Students whose academic interests extend beyond existing university programs should consult an advisor at the Multidisciplinary Studies Center. Special consideration is needed for fields combining liberal arts with professional applications, as pre-professional tracks (like pre-med or physical therapy) cannot be approved.
The Multidisciplinary Studies Center (MSC) hosts undergraduate programs that transcend traditional departmental boundaries, integrating courses from multiple disciplines.
Exceptional students may pursue research honors through individualized interdepartmental programs, with honors recognition reserved for the most outstanding graduates each year.
