The East Asian studies (EST) program offers an interdisciplinary exploration of the languages, ancient heritage, and vibrant traditions of this significant global region.
Learners start their East Asian journey with three foundational courses presented in historical sequence, covering literature, history, religious practices, visual arts, and other core elements of the area. For advanced studies, participants select four specialized courses from diverse options focusing on China, Japan, and Korea. These classes enhance comprehension of East Asian civilization through focused examinations of subjects like post-Mao Chinese society, North and South Korea, Zen philosophy, Japanese animation, and the role of women in Eastern religious traditions.
EST majors are highly recommended to pursue overseas study, preferably before their final year. Faculty advisors evaluate study abroad coursework for major credit individually. Students might need to coordinate with relevant departments concerning credit transfers, particularly for language requirement fulfillment.
