The Department of Religion and Classics offers students the opportunity to investigate the foundational civilizations of both Western and Eastern traditions, along with the principal religions that originated from these societies.
By engaging with classical, biblical, and religious texts—whether in their original languages or translated forms—students delve into the core beliefs, philosophies, customs, practices, and heritage that have influenced Western and Asian civilizations.
Our curriculum also highlights how these ancient religious and cultural foundations continue to impact modern society. Those pursuing this major will develop skills in analyzing and interpreting important ancient texts while gaining insight into their historical settings.
Students may opt for a classics major (covering both languages), or specialize in either Greek (CGRK) or Latin (LATN). We strongly recommend that all majors complete at least one year of study in each language when feasible.
