This program emphasizes earth sciences across various scales. It offers students knowledge about earth system structures and processes, highlights the importance of comprehending geological and hydrological risks, applies earth science to environmental management challenges, and equips them with skills to communicate sustainable coexistence with nature.
Students can specialize in one of these areas:
Earth surface dynamics, covering coastal risks and terrain evolution during and after ice ages,
Soil-terrain interactions and practical soil science applications,
Water systems, encompassing groundwater and surface water dynamics, pollution movement and remediation, and simulation techniques,
Geological materials and phenomena, including natural disasters, mineral deposits, and scientific investigation methods.

Qualification Requirements
Bachelor's degree in biological science, physical science, environmental science, natural resources, or engineering. Applicants with course deficiencies may be required to take appropriate undergraduate courses for no program credit and to demonstrate, by their performance in such coursework or through a qualifying exam, basic knowledge of the subject matter in the area(s) of deficiency. Application must be made to one of the eight specializations.
To apply you will need to provide: (1) college transcripts certifying successful completion of a bachelor's degree, (2) two letters of recommendation from peers, mentors, or colleagues attesting to your ability to complete graduate-level coursework, and (3) a personal written statement explaining why you are seeking a MESM degree. GRE's are not required.
A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better in the undergraduate career that can be confirmed with official transcripts from the institution (some programs may require a higher or lower GPA).
TOEFL iBT - An overall score of 80 or above
Reading: 19 ,Writing: 18, Listening: 17, Speaking: 18
The minimum score on the Paper-based TOEFL is 550.
International English Language Testing System (IELTS): All scores must be sent directly to URI. Required minimum score of 6.5, AND minimum scores in the following areas:
Reading: 6.5, Writing: 6.5, Listening: 6.5, Speaking: 6.5
Duolingo English Test: Required minimum score of 105
