This cross-disciplinary program brings together faculty from various departments and provides five distinct specialization options, spanning from molecular biology to sustainable farming systems. The Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems (SAFS) graduate concentration adopts a holistic, multidisciplinary perspective on biological and environmental sciences as they relate to agriculture, aquaculture, fisheries, nutrition, and food safety. Our diverse faculty team, including experts from both natural and social sciences, employs wide-ranging methodologies to promote economically and environmentally sustainable practices in production, management, consumption, and utilization of plant and animal resources for building healthier communities.

Research focuses encompass animal science, aquaculture, aquatic pathology, ecological anthropology, ethnobiology, entomology, fisheries, nutrition and food sciences, plant sciences, resource economics and policy, and integrated food and agriculture systems. SAFS leverages the exceptional extension and outreach initiatives of the Rhode Island Agricultural Experiment Station, Rhode Island Sea Grant, and the Coastal Resources Center. We maintain strong partnerships with stakeholders (industry groups, government agencies at all levels, and NGOs), and consistently share our findings locally and internationally to support sustainable industry development.
