The Plant Sciences program provides practical, hands-on education to equip students for diverse careers in horticulture's public and private sectors.
Numerous courses incorporate laboratory sessions or blend practical exercises with traditional lectures and study materials. Students may also apply up to 12 credits of experiential learning toward their 120-credit graduation requirement. Upon completing the program, graduates receive a Plant Sciences degree with one of three specializations:
turfgrass management,
ornamental horticulture, or
sustainable crop production.
Career paths for alumni include landscape contracting, golf course supervision, park or botanical garden administration, retail garden center ownership, plant propagation, nursery management, commercial fruit/vegetable production, lawn care services, or technical sales for agricultural suppliers. Some graduates continue to advanced studies, pursuing research and teaching positions at various institutions. The program's core focus centers on developing sustainable plant cultivation methods for both aesthetic and food production purposes.
