The University of Rhode Island's B.S. in Physics and Physical Oceanography program offers students early immersion in both fields, allowing them to develop strong foundations in each discipline right from the start.
With aligned course sequences between this program and the standard Physics B.S., students can transfer between them as late as their junior year while maintaining their graduation timeline.
Participants benefit from access to world-class oceanography research facilities, including the Pell Scientific Library, a nuclear reactor, geophysical fluid dynamics lab, the 185-foot R/V Endeavor, marine ecosystem lab, and research aquarium on the Narragansett Bay Campus.
This curriculum focuses on physics applications in oceanographic contexts. Students collaborate with faculty from both departments, gaining ideal preparation for oceanography graduate programs while remaining competitive for physics graduate studies.
Senior projects are conducted at Narragansett Bay under faculty guidance, with potential funding through the Coastal Fellowship Program.
The program also provides summer research cruise opportunities aboard the Endeavor.
