The Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures provides a Bachelor of Arts program in Global Language and Area Studies (GLAS), offering three specialization paths: Arabic Studies, Classical Studies, or Japanese Studies. This 33-credit major is structured to be completed in as few as two years for students starting in their junior year, requiring just 9 courses at minimum.
The Department also grants a Bachelor of Arts in Global Language and Area Studies (GLAS), where students select between two concentrations: Classical Studies or Japanese Studies.
The GLAS Bachelor's program enables students to focus on either language acquisition or regional studies. The curriculum starts with a foundational course, mandates at least four language semesters, includes one regional studies course, and culminates in a capstone project showcasing linguistic and cultural proficiency. All students are expected to achieve Novice High proficiency (ACTFL scale) in their chosen language—though many exceed this—while gaining practical understanding of cultural, historical, or religious contexts.
