The University of Pennsylvania exhibits remarkable interdisciplinary connections in visual media, especially printmaking and its cinematic counterparts. Julie Davis specializes in Japanese woodblock prints spanning the last 250 years, while Karen Redrobe explores motion pictures through her film courses, examining both animated and live-action cinema as forms of public media. Davis also participates actively in Penn's vibrant History of Book community, which gathers weekly for interdisciplinary discussions at the Kislak Rare Book Center. This exceptional resource, housing medieval manuscripts alongside rare books, serves scholars across historical periods and geographical specialties. Faculty collaborations have yielded numerous print exhibitions with partners including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Ross Gallery, and Penn Libraries - notably Davis's recent seminar on contemporary Japanese landscape prints and Andr Dombrowski's exhibition examining media during the Dreyfus affair.
