The AMCS Master of Arts program is designed for students pursuing professional careers in Applied Mathematics or seeking foundational knowledge for doctoral studies in fields like Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, Statistics, or Financial Mathematics. While a bachelor's degree in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics isn't mandatory, applicants should have completed enough upper-level undergraduate math courses to demonstrate both their mathematical interest and ability. In addition to Calculus, we highly recommend two semesters of Mathematical Analysis, one semester each of Linear Algebra, Probability, and Complex Analysis. Most students complete the master's degree within four semesters.
Applicants for admission are expected to have a mathematical background that is comparable to an undergraduate mathematics major. All applicants are encouraged to take courses, beyond calculus, in mathematical analysis, linear algebra, probability, and complex analysis.
A strong command of the English language is necessary for successful study at Penn. Applicants whose families do not speak English at home, or applicants who have not attended a high school or secondary school where the primary language of instruction is English, are asked to take the TOEFL, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, administered by the Educational Testing Service. In the event the TOEFL is not readily accessible, Penn will accept results from the IELTS, the International English Language Testing System.
