The graduate program in Egyptology at NELC provides in-depth exploration of ancient Egyptian languages and civilizations. The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations (NELC) grants both PhD and MA degrees across five specialized disciplines. Our doctoral and master's programs follow the general standards set by Penn's Graduate Division of Arts and Sciences, though each concentration may have unique supplementary criteria. NELC graduate students, whether pursuing master's or doctoral studies, collaborate extensively with the NELC Graduate Group faculty. This team comprises not only departmental professors but also scholars from various University departments specializing in Near Eastern studies. A NELC advanced degree opens doors to diverse professional paths. While many alumni enter academic fields, others excel in museums, government service, media, foreign relations, and beyond, as evidenced by our graduate and thesis records spanning approximately 150 years. Presently, NELC maintains one of the strongest career placement rates among Penn's Humanities departments.
