Penn's graduate economics program is a Ph.D. track managed by the Graduate Group in Economics, comprising faculty from the Economics Department along with affiliated professors from the Wharton School and School of Arts and Sciences. The University of Pennsylvania does not provide a master's degree in Economics. This rigorous program prepares students to excel in economic research, covering all key economic disciplines while specializing in theoretical and applied microeconomics, as well as contemporary macroeconomics. Program alumni secure prestigious roles at top-tier universities, research centers, and governmental organizations globally.
Applicants must present evidence of a baccalaureate degree or its equivalent, or show that they can expect such a degree by the time they begin graduate work.
A strong command of the English language is necessary for successful study at Penn. Applicants whose families do not speak English at home, or applicants who have not attended a high school or secondary school where the primary language of instruction is English, are asked to take the TOEFL, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, administered by the Educational Testing Service. In the event the TOEFL is not readily accessible, Penn will accept results from the IELTS, the International English Language Testing System.
