The Graduate Group in Demography oversees the doctoral program in demographic studies. This Ph.D. program incorporates earning a Master of Arts in Demography as part of the curriculum, though Penn does not provide a standalone master's degree option. The Graduate Group guides students through academic coursework and mentored research projects. Prospective doctoral candidates in Demography should submit their applications directly to this group. Penn boasts a distinguished legacy in demographic studies, offering students exceptional course diversity and access to numerous faculty specialists. The university stands out for its comprehensive coverage of population research areas. Graduate students benefit from workspace provisions at the Population Studies Center, whether enrolled in the Demography program or involved in Center-affiliated research. These resources encompass the Demography Library and computer labs. The Center organizes weekly seminars that enable students to stay current with cutting-edge population research and engage with visiting experts through both formal and informal interactions.
A Bachelor’s degree is a minimum requirement. While an interest in demography is essential, you do not need a background in demography, sociology, and economics.
A strong command of the English language is necessary for successful study at Penn. Applicants whose families do not speak English at home, or applicants who have not attended a high school or secondary school where the primary language of instruction is English, are asked to take the TOEFL, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, administered by the Educational Testing Service. In the event the TOEFL is not readily accessible, Penn will accept results from the IELTS, the International English Language Testing System.
