The Graduate Group in Ancient History is an interdisciplinary program spanning multiple departments, focused on studying ancient civilizations across the Near East and Mediterranean regions. Our scope ranges from early societies in the Tigris-Euphrates river valleys to the advent of Islam and formation of post-Roman kingdoms. Faculty members bring varied specializations, united by our shared mission of reconstructing historical accounts from scattered textual and archaeological sources. Doctoral candidates in this program gain expertise in political, intellectual, cultural, socioeconomic, and religious aspects of at least two distinct ancient cultures as part of their PhD preparation.
Applicants must have completion of bachelor’s degree.
A strong command of the English language is necessary for successful study at Penn. Applicants whose families do not speak English at home, or applicants who have not attended a high school or secondary school where the primary language of instruction is English, are asked to take the TOEFL, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, administered by the Educational Testing Service. In the event the TOEFL is not readily accessible, Penn will accept results from the IELTS, the International English Language Testing System.
