The Dual Romance Languages Major enables students to undertake advanced studies in two Romance Languages, choosing from French, Spanish, and/or Italian. This 18-credit program requires nine upper-level courses in each selected language. Prospective students are encouraged to reach out to the Undergraduate Coordinator or relevant department chairs for additional details and academic advising. At the University of Pennsylvania's Department of Romance Languages, students can explore undergraduate and graduate programs covering French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Catalan languages, literatures, and cultures. Undergraduate offerings span from introductory language classes to specialized seminars in French, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese cultural studies for majors and non-majors alike. Graduate programs (French, Italian, and Hispanic Studies) examine the cultural output of France, Italy, Spain, Latin America, and other historically influenced regions. Through intimate seminar settings, graduate students analyze these cultural expressions using diverse critical frameworks, including cultural studies, postcolonial theory, and philosophy. The department's strong track record in career placement reflects its dedication to both scholarly excellence and professional development for graduate students.
International applicant should have completed a program of secondary education that would enable you to enter a university in your own country (e.g., A-levels, Abitur).
A strong command of the English language is necessary for successful study at Penn. Applicants whose families do not speak English at home, or applicants who have not attended a high school or secondary school where the primary language of instruction is English, are asked to take the TOEFL, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, administered by the Educational Testing Service. In the event the TOEFL is not readily accessible, Penn will accept results from the IELTS, the International English Language Testing System.
