The Art History Major aims to enhance students' understanding of artistic creation and traditions throughout human civilization while expanding their grasp of the field's analytical and interpretive approaches. Learners cultivate abilities to critically examine artworks, refine their comprehension of the social, cultural, and individual meanings embedded in artistic creations, and investigate connections between art history and other academic fields. The program especially promotes a global perspective on artistic creation, urging students to examine both connections and contrasts between diverse visual traditions. Regular meetings with the undergraduate advisor each semester are highly recommended to review academic progress. Students are also motivated to develop proficiency in French, German, or other languages pertinent to their research focus. In their final year, majors have the opportunity to conduct independent research through an honors thesis and are welcome to actively engage in the department's colloquium series.
International applicant should have completed a program of secondary education that would enable you to enter a university in your own country (e.g., A-levels, Abitur).
A strong command of the English language is necessary for successful study at Penn. Applicants whose families do not speak English at home, or applicants who have not attended a high school or secondary school where the primary language of instruction is English, are asked to take the TOEFL, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, administered by the Educational Testing Service. In the event the TOEFL is not readily accessible, Penn will accept results from the IELTS, the International English Language Testing System.
