Oregon's prestigious jazz studies program stands out as one of the nation's most dynamic emerging jazz programs, featuring exceptional performance groups such as three big bands, a jazz guitar ensemble, a Latin jazz ensemble, and numerous combos. The well-rounded curriculum covers subjects like music theory, performance techniques, improvisation, piano studies, repertoire analysis, arranging and composition, music history, teaching methods, program design, and private lessons.
Along with specialized practice areas for jazz drummers and small groups, the 2008 renovation of UO's music facilities introduced a cutting-edge studio for jazz education, rehearsals, and student recording initiatives.
With the largest permanent music faculty on the West Coast north of Los Angeles, the School of Music and Dance maintains strong roots in classical traditions while encouraging innovation and contemporary performances.
Graduates of this program will achieve the following outcomes: Master advanced performance skills, with performance studies making up approximately two-thirds or at minimum one-third of the coursework, Develop expertise in complementary musical disciplines including music theory, historical studies, musicology, and teaching methods - these broadening studies constitute at least one-third of the curriculum, Vocal performance majors must demonstrate proficiency in English, German, French, and Italian pronunciation, along with general phonetic knowledge applicable to other languages, enabling them to comprehend repertoire texts, As a final showcase of professional mastery, students must deliver a public performance (which may serve as their thesis), typically featuring at least sixty minutes of solo recital material.
