The University of Oregon provides two Master of Music degrees in Jazz Studies - one focused on composition/arranging, and the other on instrumental performance. Those selecting the composition/arranging track will engage in advanced jazz arranging coursework along with personalized jazz composition instruction. Performance-focused students will delve into advanced jazz repertoire and improvisation classes, supplemented by individual coaching in performance techniques and jazz improvisation. All Jazz Studies MM candidates, regardless of specialization, participate in university ensembles while studying jazz teaching methods and graduate-level research approaches.
Beyond core requirements, every Jazz Studies MM student must demonstrate proficiency through an exam, conduct a research project with a public presentation, either perform a recital or produce a recording, and successfully complete an oral defense. The program encourages students to explore their artistic visions and pursue research aligned with their personal interests.
