The Master of Arts (M.A.) program in East Asian Languages and Literatures, focusing on Japanese studies, mandates the completion of at least twelve graduate-level courses. Students should select these courses in collaboration with their academic advisor. The curriculum includes: Six courses within Japanese Studies Two methodology/theory courses Two East Asian-related courses (which may be offered outside the department) Either Classical Japanese (JPN537), Advanced Readings in Japanese Literature (JPN534), or Structure of the Japanese Language (JPN541) One Global Scholars course (non-native Japanese speakers fulfill this requirement, while native speakers substitute it with an additional Japanese Studies course) Alongside coursework, candidates must either pass a final comprehensive examination or submit an MA thesis to graduate.
