Customized to each student's unique requirements and career aspirations, the Linguistics PhD program merges core principles of functional linguistic theory with comprehensive training in empirical research techniques, spanning both lab and fieldwork environments. This interdisciplinary program benefits from collaborations across the College, with contributions from East Asian and Romance Languages, Psychology, Neuroscience, Anthropology, and Computer Science departments.
Our program excels in areas including descriptive linguistics and language preservation, historical/typological/regional linguistics, first and second language learning, language instruction, experimental phonology and phonetics, sociolinguistics, and corpus linguistics.
