Sociology involves the methodical examination of human communities and social systems—their evolution, organization, and operations. Much like human civilization, the discipline of sociology encompasses a vast scope. Researchers in this field investigate social environments, ranging from intimate circles like friendships and families to institutional settings including colleges and businesses, all the way to entire countries. They analyze interpersonal connections and behaviors, dynamics of influence and disagreement, frameworks that maintain societal cohesion, and processes of social transformation.
Practical experience and applied sociological methods form essential components of our curriculum. Student opportunities encompass participation in the Inside/Out Program in collaboration with Oregon State Penitentiary, the Sociology Honors program requiring independent research and thesis writing, showcasing findings at the Undergraduate Research Symposium, diverse community engagement and research internships, peer guidance initiatives, among other possibilities.
