The University of Oregon's Geography program places strong emphasis on exploring the interconnected fields of Economy, Environment, and Sustainability. Our research spans the spectrum from predominantly physical to primarily social aspects of human-environment interactions. Key focus areas include human influences on river ecosystems, urban sustainability across developed and developing nations, wildlife preservation in protected zones, agricultural systems and economic growth, climate change effects on policies and ecosystems, along with environmental disputes and regulatory frameworks.
Geography students gain insights into how political and natural borders shape social disparities, the varying consequences of resource availability across regions, why certain areas disproportionately contribute to ecological challenges, climate impacts on biodiversity and hydrology, and how our surroundings influence identity, behavior, and decision-making. The program equips students with sought-after geospatial skills applicable across corporate, governmental, and nonprofit sectors globally. Through this investigative approach and technical training, students discover pathways to meaningful environmental progress and learn how to contribute effectively.
