Our department provides comprehensive education across philosophy's principal disciplines. We excel in several areas, including philosophy of religion, Chinese philosophy, and aesthetics, while also demonstrating strong expertise in epistemology, philosophy of language, virtue ethics, political philosophy, and modern philosophy's historical development.
With an outstanding faculty-to-student ratio and intimate class settings, we guarantee an educational experience featuring close faculty engagement. Beyond formal instruction, we foster a vibrant philosophical community that encourages casual exchanges between professors and students. Our department hosts regular guest lectures, organizes numerous reading groups through student-faculty collaboration, and benefits from the University Libraries' extensive philosophy collections.
The MA program offers two paths: 30 credit hours including a thesis, or 36 credit hours culminating in an exam. While we typically require a philosophy undergraduate degree, we may consider exceptional applicants from other fields with significant philosophy coursework. MA candidates study alongside PhD students with equal access to faculty guidance. Selected MA students now qualify for assistantships providing $16,500 stipends, health coverage, and tuition remission. Unfunded MA students can pursue their degrees part-time, with enrollment options for either fall or spring semesters.
