The OU School of Music's mission is to foster academic growth, instructional excellence, research, artistic expression, and community engagement. Both faculty and students will champion educational advancement, expand musical knowledge through performance and scholarship, and strengthen the field via professional contributions locally and globally. Founded in 1903 as OU's second academic school, it has held continuous membership in the National Association of Schools of Music since 1931. As Oklahoma's sole music institution offering doctoral programs, the School serves its community through the creative and intellectual achievements of its members. OU grants music degrees across multiple disciplines including composition, pedagogy, historical studies, performance, and music theory. While honoring its heritage, the School develops forward-thinking programs to equip students for a changing, multicultural world.
