The Communication graduate program at Oklahoma University equips students to perform innovative research across specialized fields that examine human communication processes, focusing on social, psychological, political, and cultural impacts. Our department prioritizes research excellence, so Ph.D. applicants typically have prior independent research experience from their master's studies. While no specific undergraduate courses are mandatory for admission, candidates should possess adequate foundational knowledge to tackle graduate-level coursework and commence communication research immediately. Students typically specialize in one research area while integrating key theories and methodologies from related disciplines, frequently blending approaches at interdisciplinary crossroads—such as merging intercultural and health communication, social influence with media studies, or organizational communication with global health initiatives, among other potential combinations.
