The Department of Anthropology offers dynamic graduate and undergraduate programs. Students can pursue anthropology studies through either a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology or a Bachelor of Science in Human Health & Biology. These undergraduate programs mandate coursework across various subfields along with research methodology classes, providing comprehensive knowledge about human societies across time and geography. The department facilitates hands-on learning through fieldwork initiatives, participation in the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program, and collaboration with the Honors College. Strong partnerships exist with the Oklahoma Archaeological Survey and the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History, complemented by international study options. Research areas include:
Plains hunter-gatherer mobility patterns and subsistence strategies during Paleo Indian and Archaic periods (Bement)
Bioarchaeological studies focusing on mortuary practices, skeletal analysis, forensic applications, and social identity (Cerezo-Romn)
Our 2-year Applied Medical Anthropology track, part of the Human Health and Biology program (https://www.ou.edu/cas/anthropology/graduate/hhb), integrates medical, cultural, and biological anthropology approaches to health. This prepares graduates to apply anthropological insights in healthcare settings, research institutions, and public health initiatives.
The MA in Applied Medical Anthropology serves diverse career paths, benefiting aspiring health researchers, medical school candidates seeking academic enhancement, and healthcare professionals aiming to expand their understanding of health systems and acquire research competencies.
