The Doctor of Philosophy programs in geology and geophysics are designed mainly for students pursuing research careers in Earth sciences within academia, industry, or government institutions. The Ph.D. program aims to equip students for research careers by offering specialized coursework in geology or geophysics, building a solid foundation in related disciplines like mathematics, physical sciences, biology, and engineering to enable innovative geological research, and fostering analytical thinking through original research projects. Typically, the Geology Ph.D. takes at least three years beyond the Master's degree. The University of Oklahoma's Graduate College mandates 90 credit hours of post-baccalaureate coursework. Doctoral candidates must pass the General Examination and produce a Dissertation based on independent research. Unlike structured programs, the Geology Ph.D. has no fixed course requirements—each student's curriculum is tailored individually.
