The Ph.D. program equips students with advanced professional expertise in geography, emphasizing the creation of significant, novel contributions to the field. Earning a Ph.D. necessitates completing a minimum of 90 graduate credit hours post-bachelor's degree, with the possibility of transferring up to 44 approved credits from prior graduate studies. Required coursework encompasses Contemporary Geographical Thought (6973), Research and Writing in Geography (6953), plus two graduate seminars from the Department. Additionally, candidates must develop a dissertation proposal endorsed by their advisory committee, successfully pass both written and oral General Examinations, and ultimately complete and defend their doctoral dissertation.

Qualification Requirements

An applicant to the M.A., M.S., or Ph.D. program must apply to the Graduate College using the Graduate College's on-line application system. The application to the Graduate College must include unofficial transcripts from all colleges and universities attended previously, and the GRE result report. International applicants whose first language is not English must also include the TOEFL result report.

Applicants must also submit the following documents as part of the application process:

A statement of interest in which the applicant describes his or her interests and goals, showing how these interests and goals are related to current faculty expertise,
Names and contact information of two professors who can be contacted to submit letters of recommendation on behalf of the applicant,
A resume or c.v.,
A writing sample such as a publication, thesis, or major research paper, written in English.
Scoring 6.5 or higher on the IELTS, Scoring 79 or higher on the Internet-based TOEFL (iBT)
