The Educational Studies doctoral program provides advanced professional training for educators seeking academic careers, innovative roles in education, or leadership positions. Students begin with a designated advisor and form a five-member faculty committee, led by an Educational Studies professor, to develop a customized curriculum. The Ph.D. requirements encompass foundational courses in educational philosophy, history, and sociology, along with specialized coursework in both primary and secondary focus areas. Students also complete research training aligned with their professional goals, participate in teaching and research residencies, pass comprehensive exams, and produce a dissertation. Alternatively, students may pursue dual major emphases under joint committee leadership to create interdisciplinary specializations (such as disability education research, bilingual education theory, or historical studies of educational psychology). The program also allows integration of graduate certificates from other departments (like administrative leadership or gender studies) to enhance scholarly focus within Educational Studies.
