Astronomers examine planets, stars, and various celestial objects. Students in OU's Department of Physics and Astronomy explore stellar evolution, planetary motion, and their cosmic impacts. They develop crucial research, mathematical, and scientific abilities valued by major employers like Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Raytheon. Beyond astronomy careers, the program equips students with technical expertise for fields such as data science, aerospace, finance, technical writing, and scientific research. The adaptable skills acquired during undergraduate studies are highly sought-after. Astronomy students can engage in significant faculty-led research on topics like star/planet formation, supernovae, black holes, and galaxies. As part of their coursework, they obtain practical experience using a 3.5-meter research telescope at New Mexico's Apache Point Observatory. During their capstone course, students collaborate in teams to enhance their scientific communication and reasoning abilities. They also receive personalized career guidance through one-on-one mentorship with faculty members.
