Earning a Master's degree in rehabilitation counseling enables you to assist patients in leading fulfilling, independent lives through compassionate care, evidence-based methods, and expertise in disability resources. UNT's rehabilitation counseling master's program prepares graduates to support individuals with disabilities in securing employment, building confidence for active living, and navigating difficult life changes with professional guidance. Our curriculum covers vocational rehabilitation counseling, individual and group therapy techniques, and assessment methods, thoroughly preparing students for diverse professional roles. This flexible program offers fully online course options, making it ideal for both individuals with disabilities and working rehabilitation professionals looking to advance their expertise. Practical learning opportunities are provided through the department's Wellness and Employment Lab (UNTWELL). The Department of Rehabilitation and Health Services delivers this master's program through both traditional on-campus instruction and online distance learning tailored for working professionals.
Outside coursework, students complete field internships and study a curriculum that introduces them to various rehabilitation services, professional networks, interdisciplinary collaborations, and advocacy organizations within the rehabilitation field. The program mandates completion of 100 practicum hours and 600 internship hours.
Throughout the program, you'll develop essential counseling communication and goal-setting abilities while mastering intervention strategies involving self-advocacy, psychological support, vocational planning, and social-behavioral techniques. The curriculum blends theoretical knowledge with practical application, ensuring comprehensive professional preparation.
